Demand That Wal-Mart Sell Safe Foods

Genetically modified corn coming soon to a Wal-Mart near you.
Insecticide producing Mon 810 and 863; Round-Up herbicide absorbing NK 603.  These are varieties of genetically modified (GM) corn coming soon to a grocer near you, and they will not be marked, labeled, or in any way distinguishable from conventional types of corn.  Even more troubling, they will not be regulated by the FDA despite independent researchers at the International Journal of Biological Sciences (IJBS) linking the corn to organ failure. Due to the uncertainty of the side effects of GM corn, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and General Mills have all agreed not to sell the corn at their stores or use it in any of their products. But Wal-mart is holding out.

Sign here to tell Wal-Mart to say no to genetically modified corn until the safety of the product can be determined.

More On GM Corn and The Study
The GM corn in question was developed by Monsanto, the multinational agricultural biotechnology giant.  The insecticide producing varieties, Mon 810 and 863, produce a toxin that protects the plant by rupturing the stomach of any insect that feeds on it.  It sort of sounds like something out of a bad horror flick, doesn't it? But Monsanto states the toxin will break down before making it to our tables.  However, independent researchers at the International Journal of Biological Sciences (IJBS)strongly disagree with Monsanto's theory.

Monsanto conducted a 90-day study of the effects of consuming the GM corn and concluded that the corn was safe for consumption.  But Monsanto's conclusions may not be trustworthy.  Not only does Monsanto have an economic stake in the findings, but chronic problems can rarely be found in only 90 days.  Meanwhile, researchers at IJBS who reviewed the same data found that the corn is linked to organ failure.  Specifically, the study concluded that rats who consumed GM corn showed signs of deficiency in kidney and liver function.  Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen, and haematopoietic system (the system in the body that controls cell migration and adhesion). The study recommended that additional studies be conducted for a longer period of a time (2 years) and on additional species of mammals to provide true scientifically valid data on the chronic and toxic effects of GM crops.
